Modern Scholarship

PLATO OR PODCAST? IT'S DEBATABLE

From why we’re here to where we’re heading, at Putney you’ll explore the existential and delve into the detail. Find your own formula whether it’s through the Athena scholarship programme or BAFTA challenge, lessons in PPE or even PIE – that’s Putney’s Ideas Exchange. Food for thought. We’ll ignite your learning journey… whatever your destination.

Beyond

Building the confidence to venture beyond the curriculum makes a Putney education so much more than just ‘school’. We have an ethos of ‘Modern Scholarship’ and entrepreneurial thinking, which makes learning both exciting and relevant.

We champion intellectual agility, wonder and curiosity, so you’ll be taught to question and explore.  Whether you are stretching yourself through the Year 7 Badge Challenge, making your own films or podcasts in the Year 8 BAFTAs, or attending workshops and talks in the Putney Ideas Exchange (PIE), there is plenty to keep you thinking!

Thinking Ahead

As thoughts turn to further study, our Athena Programme – Putney’s unique programme of academic extension – broadens minds and develops critical thinking in readiness for university. You’ll be encouraged to take risks in your learning; asking the right questions becomes as important as finding the right answers!

We begin exploring ethics and philosophical problems in PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics). In the Sixth Form a bespoke curriculum and tailored support combine with LEAP Lectures (Limitless Education at Putney) Hot Topics and Futures to provide electives that allow you to fine tune your academic CV in readiness for your chosen field of study.

Debate & Voice

Putney has a democratic culture, so respect, inclusion and spirited discussion are valued as highly in the classroom as in our debating Forum. Being able to articulate ideas intelligently and with confidence is an essential skill for life, so our debating programme not only gives you a voice but teaches you the skills to use it well.

Student led clubs and societies are a major part of life. We have an active Student Council, Student Leadership Team and many other clubs and societies, all offering the opportunity to develop new interests and work with other year groups to make friends and see things from others’ points of view.

Results & Destinations

At Putney, the journey is very much the destination when it comes to learning. That said, the destinations are impressive! Many of our alumnae go on to win places at the finest universities, art colleges, and conservatoires both in the UK and abroad.

This year our Year 13 have received record offers to US Universities, including Columbia, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Johns Hopkins Universities. Scholarships to Princeton and Duke are just a few among them, and every year, students leave us to pursue their academic interests in Medicine, Law, PPE, Science and Humanities among many other subjects at Oxford, Cambridge and other top institutions.

Juniors

We believe in putting pupils in the driving seat of their own learning from an early age and our Junior School IGNITE programme does exactly that.

Pupils develop their thinking skills and explore the adventure of learning with independence, excitement, and curiosity. They might become inventors for the day and learn to “Think like an Engineer” or become intrepid “Global Explorers” to learn about other countries and cultures.

Whatever they’re doing, the four key Cs are always at the heart of their learning: Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Communication.
